Objectives
This course will provide students insights into the neurocognitive bases of perception-action couplings insofar as relevant for sport psychology. Students will learn about relevant studies in this domain and how to apply the theories and models to sport psychological issues. In combination with the B3-course Sport Psychology, the Action and Sport course is part of the track ‘Sport Psychology’. When obtaining a Master’s degree this track can lead to the basic qualification of the Dutch organization for Sport Psychologists (VSPN Basiskwalificatie Sportpsychologie).

Contents
This course covers different aspects of action and sport. If you are interested in movement and sport, this is an opportunity to focus on the neurocognitive bases of perception-action couplings that are relevant for sport psychology. Imagine catching a ball. How is its position processed by the brain, and how do you ‘predict’ the best way and moment to stretch your arm and catch the ball? Could mental practice improve sport performance? And what is the effect of stress when you’re playing an important game? Stress, anxiety, arousal and attention all affect an athlete’s performance. This course will provide insights into these phenomena, their interrelationships and how we can affect them. Other things that are covered are the effects of motor imagery and mental practice and the coordination of perception-action processes when playing in teams. The abovementioned topics are covered in eight lectures, and self-tuition of additional study material. There will also be question hours where students can discuss the material with the teachers.
