Objectives (Doelstelling)
This course is about the properties of the various basic experimental designs and the corresponding statistical analyses. The focus will be on behavioral data, but the principles extend to neuro-imaging and electrophysiological data. There are three main objectives: (i) to refresh the knowledge and skills the students are already supposed to possess in this area; (ii) to add to this repertoire several useful extensions; (iii) to provide a unified view on the various techniques in terms of the general linear model. This is worthwhile in itself, but also of practical use in understanding and doing the (univariate, voxel-wise) statistical analysis of fMRI activation data.

Contents (Inhoud / Omschrijving)
In pursuing these goals, a practical course is taken. For each session there is a reading assignment and an exercise assignment, both involving data analyses with SPSS. Students not familiar with SPSS can form teams with students who are. However, the book used also contains an introduction into SPSS, so it can also be consulted for this purpose.

Literature (Literatuur)
Discovering Statistics Using SPSS by Andy Field, chapters 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12. A copy of this book is available in the student office.

Teaching methods (Werkvormen)
Reading assignments and discussion of data-analysis exercises to be prepared at home. At the start of each session the students are assumed to have completed the assignments and to have the output of the required analyses with them. During the meeting the assignments will then be discussed and illustrated by appropriate SPSS-output. Thus, the meetings have principally a feedback function and the students should feel free to bring up any question or problem they encountered with respect to the assignments. .
