Objectives (Doelstelling)
The course aims at providing an introduction to the development of Christianity and Church during the first five centuries CE, a development in which Gnostic currents have played an important part and, in some respects, even a decisive role. In actual fact, the historical development of the Christian (Catholic) Church is only comprehended by those who have a more than superficial knowledge of the many challenging Gnostic currents (and even rivalling Gnostic churches).
Contents (Beschrijving)

Introduction to ancient Gnostic-Christian currents and texts in the context of the emergence of the (originally very varied) Christian Church. Texts include the Nag Hammadi writings (e.g. the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Truth, the Gospel of Philip etc.) and writings like the Gospel of Mary and the Gospel of Judas. Currents include the school of Basildes, Valentinus, etc.
