Objectives (Doelstelling)
This course gives an in-depth overview on how we encode, store and retrieve information in terms of memory systems, which are anatomically defined structures supporting specific and diverse operations all characterized as memory.

Contents (Inhoud / Omschrijving)
This course has two basic parts: Initially, current concepts of human memory systems based on recent research probing neural underpinnings of mnemonic processes will be taught in three blocks each with a different methodolical angle. Thereafter, specialized areas of research are introduced by four topical lectures expanding the scope of the course to domains closely interacting with memory like navigation, cognitive control of working memory, emotion and computational modelling as well as animal models. Neuropsychology (Roy Kessels, Paul Eling) - Dissociating memory systems - Spatial memory - Semantic memory Electrophysiology (Ole Jensen) - Working memory - Long-term memory - From working memory to consolidation Functional Neuroimaging (Guillén Fernández) - Turning experiences into memories - Remembering - The fate of memories Topical lectures - Spatial memory (Gabriele Janzen) - Frontal lobe function and working memory (Roshan Cools) - Emotional memory bias (Indira Tendolkar) - Animal models of normal and disturbed learning and remembering (Roald Maes) - Computational models of memory function (Lucia Talamini)
