Prerequisites (Toelatingsvoorwaarden)

The course is open to Research Master and PhD students.

Objectives (Doelstelling)
The goal of this course is to teach students the foundations of multivariate analysis, focus on both theory and applications.
Contents (Inhoud / Omschrijving)

This course is the first of four courses that together form the Quantitative Series of the Research Master (Multivariate Analysis, Structural Equations Modeling, Multilevel Analysis, and Dynamic Systems Analysis). Multivariate Analysis is a foundations course that provides an introduction into the most common multivariate methods, and the knowledge and skills needed for the remaining three courses. Multivariate statistical techniques are the basic tools for experimental and non-experimental research in the psychological and educational sciences. This course begins with a brief review of the basic principles of hypothesis testing and research design, and of multiple regression and correlation (MRC) analysis. Following these introductions, the remainder of the course provides an overview and introduction into the most common multivariate techniques, the problems they address, and their applications. These techniques include, but are not limited to: logistic regression, canonical correlation analysis, hierarchical loglinear analysis, multivariate analysis of variance, repeated measures analyses, discriminant function analysis, and factor analysis. The connections will be explained of these techniques to structural equation modeling, multilevel modeling, and dynamic systems analyses.
