Organic Chemistry

Course ID
NWI-MOL095
Credits
6
Scheduled
first quarter
Teaching methods
  • 32 hrs lecture
  • 32 hrs problem session
Pre-requisites
Structure of atoms and molecules, Molecular structure, Reactions and kinetics, (Project) Synthesis of biomolecules.
Objectives

After the course, the student is able to:

  1. distinguish radical reactions, concerted reactions and ionic reactions
  2. understand the aforementioned reactions mechanistically en reproduce the mechanisms by means of detailed electron migrations
  3. understand the different methods and reactions that are used for creating CC-bonds
  4. apply these methods and reactions on specific target molecules
  5. recognize and workout basic strategies for the synthesis of common structural elements.
Contents
The course Organic chemistry builds upon the conceptual approach of the courses 'Reactions and kinetics' and 'Synthesis of biomolecules' by focussing on the relationship between functional groups and organic chemistry transformations. For the synthesis of any given organic molecule (natural product, drug, polymer, etc.), organic chemists have access to a well-filled toolbox of methods and techniques. Part of this toolbox will be covered during this course, with a focus on the development of a thorough mechanistic understanding.
Subjects
  • radical reactions
  • concerted reactions
  • reactions of enols and enolates
  • reactions of carboxylic acids
  • electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions
  • 'neighboring group' participation
Examination

Multiple choice tests (4 in total, 1 hour per test) and a written test. The average of the best three multiple choice tests counts for 20% of the final grade. The multiple choice tests are only valid in the academic year in which they were taken.
