Leerdoelen (Objectives)
- The main objective of the course Immunology is to provide insight into the function of the normal, helathy immune system.
- To understand how disorders of the immune system can be explained, such as autoimmunity, immunodeficiencies and tumor formation.
- To understand how the immune system can be manipulated for therapeutic applications.
- To provide a solid basis for an immunology-related internship at a later phase.

Beschrijving (Contents)
The immune system consists of innate and adaptive defense mechanisms against (pathogenic) microorganisms. Insight in the immune system is important to understand disorders of the system, such as autoimmunity, immunodeficiencies and tumor formation. Insight in the immune system is important for therapeutic manipulation of the system. The course consists of the following themes: Introduction immune system Innate immunology MHC complex structure and function, and antigen processing B cell development, B cell receptor and antibodies T cell development and T cell receptor Immune cell receptors, ligands and signal transduction Cellular immunity Humoral immunity Infection and immunodeficiencies Tolerance and autoimmunity Manipulation of the immune reaction Transplantation immunology Tumor immunology Immunological techniques
The teachers in the course are from several pre-clinical and clinical departments of the UMC St Radboud. The course language will be English. The themes will be globally introduced by an introduction lecture (HC). Using the text book, the course manual, and self study assignments, the knowledge of themes will be further advanced during a responsive lecture (RC). Some themes will include a wet practical training or a PC-assisted practical training (COO). Grading is based on practical training reports and a final multiple choice test. After finishing the course, the student has obtained a solid basis in Immunology.
